What it is not: a sales pitch. I do not sell investments or insurance and do not recommend specific securities. If what you need is an investment adviser, I will say so and point you in the right direction.

- Last year's tax returnFederal and Virginia, every page. It shows your income mix, filing status, withholding and what was claimed.
- Most recent pay stub for each jobGross pay, taxes withheld, 401(k) and benefit deductions, year-to-date totals.
- The last two or three months of bank and card statementsOr your budgeting app, open. We walk through where the money goes.
- Every debt: balance, interest rate, minimum paymentCards, car, student loans, mortgage, medical, personal loans. Statements or the app are fine.
- Retirement and investment balances401(k) or 403(b), IRA, Roth, HSA, brokerage, 529, plus your contribution rate and the employer match.
- Housing numbersMortgage statement with rate, balance and escrow, or your rent and lease end date.
- Insurance summaryHealth plan and deductible, life and disability coverage amounts, auto and home premiums.
- If self-employed: year-to-date income and expensesA profit-and-loss report or simple totals, estimated payments made, and the business bank account.
- Any IRS or state letters, unfiled years, or tax balancesHave the letter in front of you; the notice number tells us what to do.
